2024 | Michael Connelly
Mike’s involvement dates back many years as a coach and athletic association president. Since then, he has been a member of various committees representing the needs and safety of the young people in our diocese and community. His involvement has influenced the lives of thousands of young people and his dedication to serve has made a difference in youth ministry.
Whether direct involvement or working behind the scenes, many will agree that Mike is a caring and patient man with the best interests of his family, friends, acquaintances, and those he serves in mind. Mike has served on the Advisory Board, Athletic Advisory Committee, and Golf Committee. Mike’s countless contributions to youth ministry through these committees are invaluable to office-hosted events, new and updated policies and rules, and bringing awareness to the needs of the young people to encourage them to grow in their faith and as individuals. Mike can be seen at the Annual Pilgrimage as the crowd control leader, working with the police escort to ensure the safety of the hundreds of pilgrims. He is a regular on the golf course at the CYO Joseph A. McNesby, Jr. Golf Outing, which benefits our young people.
Mike was an integral member of the committee that created the safe environment policies and procedures for the Diocese of Wilmington, known as “For the Sake of God’s Children.” For over 20 years, these policies have created safe and sacred environments in our parishes, schools, and other ministries, most notably youth sports. He has worked with the Catholic Schools Office and the Office for Religious Education staff to train new volunteers and staff to provide a safe and welcoming environment to their students.
Mike’s expertise, commitment, and solid faith have been key to the ongoing success of For the Sake of God’s Children. Mike also served as the Safe Environment Director of the Diocese for 7 years. In this role, he not only served as a resource to parishes, schools, and other ministries, but he oversaw diocesan-wide compliance with the policies that he helped create. For many years, Mike has served on the Diocesan Review Board which advises the Bishop on crucial matters concerning safe environments. Mike has set the standard in the Diocese of Wilmington for safety and vigilance.
