COACH JIM BLUNT MEMORIAL AWARD
In November 2007, Catholic Youth Ministry and the CYM Track family lost our dear friend, Jim Blunt.
Jim’s passing was a tremendous loss to anyone that was fortunate enough to have met and have known him. Jim coached many different sports in the CYM program for 35 years but his first love was track. Jim lived the purpose of CYM sports of “promoting Christian values” and was an example to so many children in the Diocese of Wilmington.
In 2008, the Office for Catholic Youth Ministry instituted the Coach Jim Blunt Memorial Award to recognize individuals in the CYM program that help promote those Christian values and help provide a safe environment for our children.

2026 | TO BE ANNOUNCED
2025 | Matthew & Diane Kelly, St. Hedwig
Matt and Diane began their journey with CYM sports at St. Hedwig in 1990, coaching various sports including softball, volleyball, cheerleading, and basketball. Matt served as the Athletic Association President while Diane held the Secretary position. In 1997, they pioneered the third and fourth grade basketball league at St. Hedwig, which continued until the school closed in 2006, after which it transitioned to St. Matthew and eventually the CYM league. They also organized a senior boys basketball league at St. Matthew.
In the mid 90s, Matt took on the role of CYM Football Coordinator, drawing from his extensive experience as an official. He played a crucial role in establishing safety standards and actively monitors games on Sundays to ensure fair play and address any issues. Together, Matt and Diane later became the CYM Boys Basketball Coordinators in the mid-2000s, managing the schedules for up to 3,000 games each season, including playoffs.
Their 35 years of commitment to coaching and coordinating have positively impacted countless young athletes throughout the Diocese. Their dedication exemplifies servant leadership and promotes Christian values, creating a safe and enriching environment in CYM Sports. We are truly grateful for their many contributions.
2024 | Susan Leonard, St. Helena
Sue’s footprint in CYM began in the late 60’s when the office was known as CYO. Sue started as a basketball official when CYO began training officials to accommodate the increase in teams and to offset higher-priced officials from outside organizations. In the late 80’s, as the athletic program continued to grow,
Sue took on the demanding and vital job of creating and managing basketball, volleyball, and softball schedules, which found a home at Sue’s kitchen table. Even after taking on this new role, Sue continued officiating basketball and volleyball. She also coached basketball and softball at St. Helena for many years.
To this day, Sue continues her service to CYM athletics as the volleyball, girls’ basketball, and softball coordinator, an official, and a valuable resource to those in the organization. Sue creates and manages the schedules for each of these sports and provides support and guidance to the coaches, among many other responsibilities. Her familiarity with the CYM athletic program and daily operations is instrumental to the league’s ongoing success.
Sue’s easygoing disposition is a blessing to everyone when she walks into a gym to referee because she always brings skill and fairness to each and every contest. Sue’s interpersonal skills inspire and motivate others to work effectively together with the common goal of providing a fair, fun, and safe environment for all athletes. She is patient and maintains her composure when handling challenging situations, with the ability to facilitate resolutions.
Catholic Youth Ministry has been a part of Sue’s life as a highly successful player through grade school and high school, and she has continued as a beloved sports coordinator and referee for over 55 years. Countless young athletes have benefitted from Sue’s positive impact on CYM. Sue’s love and continuity of service to CYM make it such a well-respected organization. Her continued commitment and dedication to embracing good sportsmanship, fair play, and Christian values leave a lasting impression on all those in the program.
